FREELANCE RESEARCH

John McLaren is available for freelance research, writing, and consultant work. His areas of expertise include New England history, Colonial American history, the American Revolution, the Civil War, history and religion, family history, and folklore. John also has experience researching and writing about other periods and events.

Throughout his graduate work, John completed many courses that required a solid foundation and mastery of research methodology and expertise. In these courses, he learned and applied skills such as historical research and writing, peer and literature reviews, and annotated bibliographies. John understands the need to carefully select and use peer-reviewed scholarly primary and secondary source material for the best research outcome. John also spent two semesters as a research intern with two non-profits focused on local histories. In those roles, he crafted a research project culminating in a public programming proposal that would support a program at one of the organization’s historic sites. He also researched inquiries and questions submitted by site managers on various historical topics, added content to the organization’s internal resource database, and created social media posts based on research he conducted to entice the public. He is continuing his work by providing services as a research volunteer for a local historic house museum, where he researches various topics and questions related to the museum’s properties and former owners.
