Sue Dunham (1767-1852), primarily from Pittsfield, Massachusetts, was a rare individual for the era of which she was born. She was famously known as ‘Crazy Sue’ with many accounts describing her as being a spinster, opinionated, non-apologetic, and quick with witty replies. She would take items from people’s homes, which would appear in other households. She was well-versed in Scripture, as she attended church in multiple towns. Having grown up in a normal household during the Revolutionary period, it’s unclear of why her adulthood consisted of wandering across different towns (some speculate religious or political upbringing). However, she wandered all of her adult life, making a name for herself wherever she went. Despite making a living off begging and stealing, there are no records of her being prosecuted or jailed for her actions.
