The Fairbanks House is the oldest surviving timber-frame home in the United States. Its age was verified by dendrochronology, with the oldest parts of the home dating back to 1637. The home stayed within the same family for eight (8) generations until the 20th century, and has never had a mortgage on it. The property was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1961 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Beyond the surface, the Fairbanks House contains superstitious signs to ward off evil, witches, and fire. Hex marks (one pictured above) were found throughout the house, most on structural additions (not the original property). A St. Andrew’s cross and “demon trap” (a series of complex lines meant to capture and confuse demons) were found at the original location of the front door. Old shoes were found in the chimney, which would trap demons and witches and protect the families.
