The Wiscasset Jail (now known as the 1811 Lincoln County Museum and Old Jail), is located in Wiscasset, Maine. It was built between 1809-1811, and would serve as the primary penitentiary location for the territory of Maine. When Maine became a state in 1824, it continued to serve as the main incarceration spot. The jail actively held prisoners until 1913, then transitioned to temporarily holding prisoners who were waiting to appear in court through 1953. The building was sold to the Lincoln County Historical Society in 1954. The jail was considered humanitarian by 19th century standards, as the building contained separate cells and slits in the walls to serve as windows. In many of the cells, still visible today, tourists can see examples of prisoner graffiti. Tours are still conducted during the summer months.
