Chimborazo Hospital is located in Richmond, Virginia. It functioned as a Civil War hospital between 1862 and 1865. Approximately 75,000 Confederate soldiers were treated at the hospital; between 5,000 to 7,000 unfortunately succumbed to their injuries. The majority of those who perished at the hospital are buried at Oakwood Cemetery, a mile away, in the dedicated Confederate section. After the war, most of the wooden structures were demolished, with local residents taking the wood for firewood. While all of the original buildings on the hill are long gone, the pictured 20th-century building now houses the Chimborazo Medical Museum, which discusses the history of the hospital, as well as other Civil War hospitals, and the history of practice of medicine.
