Pictured here is the Heslington Brain – it was found in a skull that was discovered in Heslington, Yorkshire, England in 2008 by the York Archaeological Trust. The skull is thought to be from the Iron Age, roughly 2,600 years old. Ongoing research is being conducted to determine how the brain has been preserved for so long – it has been deemed the best preserved ancient brain the world, and the oldest preserved brain across Europe and Asia. While research is ongoing, early theories suggest that the manner in which the individual died/was killed and environmental conditions played a crucial part in the brain’s long-term preservation.
