The movie “Tales of Terror” was released in 1962 and stars Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, and Basil Rathbone. The movie comprised of three segments, one being the “Black Cat,” which was adapted from the 1843 Edgar Allan Poe short story. In this segment, the leading character was not the three actors previously mentioned. It was a cat. While the role was already filled by a ‘professional’ cat actor, additional cats were needed as understudies and for publicity shots. Auditions were held, where 152 cats tried out, and 7 were chosen based on how “mean” their faces and eyes appeared.
