Millions of animals “served” during World War I. They were used for a variety of reasons, including transport of food, ammunition, and medical supplies, communication, poison detection, and companionship. Pictured above is Togo, the “ship’s cat” on HMS Dreadnought, used primarily to hunt rodents. Togo was a Persian cat, and was known for resting in the barrels of the ship’s main battery.
