Eugen Weidmann was the last person publicly executed in France (pictured above). He was executed by guillotine on June 17, 1939. Public executions were banned by French president Albert Lebrun due to the behavior of the crowd (some speculate that, although photographs were illegal, many did take them during the event). However, the guillotine was still a legal form of capital punishment until 1981, when the death penalty was abolished by France. Hamida Djandoubi was the last person executed by the guillotine in France, which took place in 1977.
